How does WSET Level 1 in-person WSET course work?Updated 9 days ago

We offer many course format options for getting WSET certified, so you can choose the option that works for your learning style and budget the best. WSET Level 1 in-person course consists of self-paced online pre-course and 1 day in classroom with an instructor.

WSET Level 1 In-person Course 

  1. Enrolling in Course: You'll receive a purchase confirmation email within minutes of enrolling in an in-person course.

  2. Course Access: Within 30 minutes of enrolling, you'll get an email titled 'Great Choice!...
    ' with a link to online pre-course study materials. Note: No wine kit is sent for in-person courses

  3. Study Materials and Shipping: Level 1 students can download a PDF textbook online and will receive a hardcopy on the live class date

  4. Suggested Pre-Study Time: While not required, Level 1 students are encouraged to explore the online pre-course and PDF textbook for better preparation

  5. What to Bring to In-Person Class:  On the day of your in-person class, come prepared with:

    • Your study materials (if applicable)
    • A valid ID (for exam verification)
    • Notebook & pencils for notes and the exam
    • Lunch is not included at all locations, please refer to
    • the “Great Choice!” email for details
    • Questions! Your instructor is here to help.

  1. Taking the Exam:  The official WSET exam is at the end of your in-person course. Exam date/time reminders will be sent. If you enrolled within 10 days, contact [email protected] to schedule your exam.

  2. Exam Grading and Results: Your exam is sent to WSET London for grading. Once results are in, you’ll receive an email from [email protected]  within 3-50 days, depending on your course level. If you you passed the exam the results email will include a digital certificate and badge.


WSET Level 1 Exam Info

WSET Level 1 recommended study hours are 8-12 hours in order to succeed in the exam. You can register for the online exam through your course within 12 months of purchasing the course. The exam is 30 multiple choice questions and you need to get 70% correct to pass it. After passing the exam your results and digital badge and certificate will be sent to you by email within about 3-6 weeks of the exam.

  • Can I skip levels if I have prior knowledge?
    • Yes, especially if you have industry experience or previous wine education, you might consider starting at a higher level. Please, review the Course Specification to determine the right level for you.

  • Is Level 1 necessary for absolute beginners?
    • While not mandatory, Level 1 is highly recommended for complete beginners for a solid foundational understanding.
